Davis Oval is a public open space in the Town of Mosman Park. Current users include immediate residents and the wider community, such as sporting clubs who train on Davis Oval.
Over the past few months, the Town has worked with immediate residents and lighting consultants and contractors on designing a new lighting option that allows part of Davis Oval to be used for community sports in the afternoon and early evening (for training purposes), exercise, dog walking and leisure while respecting the neighbourhood character of the Oval and the immediate residents surrounding it.
The proposal for lighting Davis Oval is at a concept phase only and requires both Council approval and funding, which has not yet been secured. Once we collate all the community feedback, we will present it to Council for their consideration and then seek to secure funding. Both of these things need to happen, before the project proceeds.
We know how important public open spaces are to our local community and are therefore, seeking your feedback on this proposed design for new lighting at Davis Oval.
We will collate all the feedback we receive and present it to Council in late 2021.
If the project proceeds, we will also use your feedback when conducting the detailed design for the lighting. Please read the FAQs and detailed design notes (both on the right hand side) to learn more about the project and provide your feedback below by no later than 26 October 2021.
Background
Lighting at Davis Oval was identified in August 2020 as a project worthy of expending a Commonwealth COVID-19 grant allocated to the Town.
It was identified that the current poles at Davis Oval (three in total) were not structurally safe and needed to be replaced.
Works to replace the deteriorating light poles were scheduled to commence in mid-Feb 2021.
Works were then immediately placed on hold to allow for community consultation with impacted residents living in close proximity to Davis Oval.
Since then (Feb 2021), the Town and Council have been meeting with residents to work towards a lighting option that best minimises any adverse impact, while still allowing opportunities for community sport.
Due to severe and unprecedented weather conditions in mid-July, one of the light poles at Davis Oval fell over. There was no damage to persons or property. This light pole was promptly removed and a second light pole was removed as a precautionary measure.
Currently, one light pole remains installed on Davis Oval.
A proposed lighting design has now been drawn up (with the expertise of lighting consultants)
This option is now being presented to the broader community for feedback.
