What is Public Health?
Public health has a wide focus on protecting and improving the health of entire communities rather than on individuals. It involves policies, programs, and actions that prevent illness, promote wellbeing, and reduce health risks. blic health also considers the broader social and environmental factors that influence health such as housing, education, employment, access to healthcare, and safe public spaces. These conditions, often called social determinants of health, can have a major impact on how people live and their overall quality of life.
What is a Public Health Plan?
A Public Health Plan is a long term strategy developed by Local Governments to improve the health and wellbeing of their community. It identifies local health priorities, sets goals, and outlines practical steps to achieve them. Rather than focusing on hospitals or medical treatment, a Public Health Plan looks at the everyday factors that shape wellbeing - things like green spaces, safety, social connection, and access to services. It provides a roadmap for creating healthier communities through prevention and early intervention.
What Is the Town Already Doing to Support Health and Wellbeing?
The Town of Mosman Park is actively delivering a range of facilities, programs, and regulatory services that contribute to a healthier and more connected community. These initiatives are designed to promote physical activity, safeguard environmental health, and foster social inclusion and wellbeing across all ages.
Through the provision and maintenance of high-quality public spaces, support for active transport, engagement with local schools, and delivery of critical environmental health functions, the Town demonstrates a strong commitment to creating a safe, vibrant, and health promoting environment. These ongoing efforts reflect the Town’s role not only as a service provider but also as a community leader in advancing public health outcomes.
Why are Local Governments required to prepare a Public Health Plan?
Under the Public Health Act 2016 (WA), every Local Government must prepare a Public Health Plan. These plans are developed in alignment with the State Public Health Plan to ensure a consistent and coordinated approach to improving health across Western Australia.
Will The Plan Reflect Community Needs?
Absolutely. Community input is central to the process. The draft plan has been developed using data gathered by the Department of Health and public ensuring it responds to local priorities and aspirations. By sharing your ideas, you help shape strategies that matter most to Mosman Park.
All feedback will be reviewed and grouped into themes. While the plan can’t address every individual concern, it will focus on the most prevalent issues significant health risks within our community, alongside available resources, and expertise.
This plan will guide how we promote, protect, and enhance public health across the Town for the next five years and beyond.
