The Town of Mosman Park is embarking on a program to future proof its parks and sports ovals. Over the coming years the Town will be developing master plans for individual parks to address current and future management challenges.
This engagement relates specifically to the Genders Park Sustainable Open Spaces Master Plan (SOS Master Plan).
Why is sustainable master planning needed?
The Town’s Strategic Community Plan highlights community aspirations including increased urban tree canopy, use of green spaces as much as possible, and appropriately managed facilities to meet current and future needs of the whole community. A master plan is required to ensure these aspirations are delivered in a coordinated manner.
The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is reducing the Town’s licensed entitlement of groundwater used for irrigating public open space. Keeping the Town’s parks green into the future will only succeed if parks and irrigation are designed to allow more efficient use of groundwater.
Designing park layout and irrigation are integral to each other. Meeting the required groundwater use reduction will require a combination of modified park design, improved management practices, replacement of old infrastructure and use of new technology.
